Claretian Ashram was established in the Gandhian city of Wardha as a study house for students of Philosophy in 1989. Geographically it is situated in the diocese of Chanda in Maharashra. The original vision of starting a study house in the heartland of India was to impart an inculturated formation for the students from various cultural and linguistic backgrounds. This centre had a humble beginning with Frs. Alexander Kureekattil and John Paikattu and five students in a small shed in the Rajiv Nagar village of Sawangi Meghe Panchayat. In the beginning (from 1989 to 1996) the students of Claretain Ashram attended classes at the Darsana Institute of Philosophy, taking part in the two-year Philosophy programme run by the CMI Congregation. In June 1996, the Claretian Ashram study house was raised to the status of College of Philosophy as to combine the study of both Philosophy and Graduation. On 16 July 1997 it was formally blessed by Mar Vijay Anand, Bishop of Chanda and inaugurated by Rev. Fr. Mathew Pottemparambil, Provincial of Bangalore Province. From 2003 Claretian Ashram also gives initial formation for the aspirants form this region.
